Born February 6, 1918 in Winchester, KY (Clark County) to Emma Hubbard Miller and Allen Jennings Miller Sr., the third of three children. The family moved to Louisville, KY in 1920, then to Bowling Green, KY in 1923, where he attended school and graduated from Western Kentucky University with degrees in Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. In 1941, he moved to Dallas, TX to develop paint formulations for defense contractor North American Aviation. There he met Charlene Davis of Arlington, TX and they married November 4, 1944. The evening the armistice was signed ending World War II, radio news alerted them that their jobs were over at North American, and in 1945, he began working as a research geochemist at Magnolia Petroleum Company, which became Mobil Oil (now Exxon). Early in his career, he led field exploration crews across the American West, but most of his career was working at Mobil’s Field Service Research Laboratory in Duncanville, TX. He retired from Mobil in 1983 after 38 years of service.
Allen and Charlene lived in Arlington, TX where they raised two daughters, Jan and Susan. They were active in First Presbyterian Church of Arlington where he served several terms as an elder. In retirement, he volunteered at Arlington Memorial Hospital for over 20 years. Allen was a loving, devoted and dedicated husband and father.
He is survived by his wife of 76 years, Charlene; daughters: Jan Miller of Arlington, TX and Susan Miller Stewart and husband, Stan, of Spring Hill, Tn.; 3 grandchildren: Caroline Stewart and Trent Stewart of Spring Hill, TN, and Chloe Stewart of Las Vegas, NV; and one great-grandchild. Survivors also include niece, Sara Lou Lantz and husband, Neil, of Fishers, IN; nephew, Robert Miller Jr. and wife, Di, of Lexington, OH; and many great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Robert Miller Sr.; and sister, Sarah Miller Finn. Allen is also survived and preceded by innumerable friends and neighbors that he treasured throughout his life. The family is deeply grateful for the support and care provided by staff at Universal Health Service (hospice) of Fort Worth.
A memorial service may be planned later. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Allen’s memory may be made to First Presbyterian Church Arlington, Mission Arlington, or Walls Universal Health Service of Fort Worth.
