Born Annie Jo Hightower on June 7, 1931, Miss Annie, as she was often affectionately called, passed from this world on Nov 14, 2017 after a lengthy illness. Annie was born in Houston, Texas, the third of four sisters who nicknamed her Cha Che. She lived in Texas most of her life. Annie had 5 children with Franklin Porter White of Houston (now deceased) and one additional child with her second husband John Joseph Hoffman (also deceased).
Annie was a strong woman with many talents and contributions in life. Annie worked for the Nieman Marcus catalog prior to her retirement and won national awards for her skills and accomplishments in salesmanship. She also worked in the early 1960's as a Dental Assistant, and at the American Dental Association convention she introduced the Color-Coding file system which was adopted and put into use in every dental office in America. In the early 1970's, Annie and her beloved husband John became entrepreneurs, starting a small family ice cream business which was a success. Annie was a private pilot, a member of the 99's Women's Flying club and the Experimental Aircraft Association. She and John (also a private pilot) spent 5 years of their marriage building an open-cockpit, 26-ft wingspan Experimental Aircraft called the FlyBaby, for which they took first place at the National EAA convention at Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Annie was commended by the F.A.A. for her maneuvering and quick thinking in a 1979 airplane crash, when her actions resulted in the saving of three lives. Annie was adventurous. In addition to her joy of flying, she also rode a Honda Goldwing all over the U.S. in her late 50's and early 60’s, enjoyed traveling and throughout her life was a talented fine artist. Annie was a follower of Christ and was well-read, embracing many schools of philosophy. Annie had a great sense of humor and was never afraid to say what she thought. She was an inspiration to all and will be remembered affectionately by all who knew her.
Annie is survived by 1 sister, 6 children, 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She also had many friends and admirers, nieces, nephews, extended family and in-laws who all loved her very much. She will be sorely missed.
