Barbara Hickey passed from this life peacefully with family at her side on March 11, 2025. She was at home where she wanted to be. Having lived in Texas all but for two of her ninety years she was a true Texas gal. She was born in Pampa, Texas on May the first 1934 to Elrey and Zanie Ash where she learned the true meaning of family and love. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Glenda Fay Johnson, and her son, David Earl Hickey. Nurtured by a strong feeling for God, she developed a desire to study His word. In later life she became a very accomplished Bible teacher, especially in ladies' classes. She also had a thirst for knowledge in many areas. Barbara graduated from Odessa high school in 1952 with honors. Enrolled in Odessa College planning to major in art which was one of her passions. She was later sidetracked from this pursuit by her interest in music. It is in the college choir where she met Carroll Hickey which changed both of their lives. They married April 29, 1953, in Odessa and were together almost constantly for the next seventy-two years. Carroll shipped out for Korea after 18 days of marriage and was gone for one year. He came home and enrolled in Texas Western, later the University of Texas at El Paso, she became the president of university assistant secretary, Carroll got a teaching position at Hereford High school, she became the principal secretary, Carroll got a position at Lubbock Christian college, and she became the president’s secretary. They moved to Wichita Falls and while Carroll was teaching at Midwestern University, she decided to get her teaching certificate and graduated magna cum laude. They were blessed with two wonderful children, David Earl and Barbara Anne which were two of the highlights in her life. She loved the two years she lived in Louisiana but wanted to get back to Texas, so they ended up in Arlington, Texas where she and the family have lived since 1970. While Carroll was teaching at the University of Texas at Arlington, she also became a faculty member. They shared adjoining offices for seventeen years. Hence, Carroll and Barbara always worked together. This includes the two of them traveling to over seventeen countries which was highlighted by her visit to her family clan castle in Scotland. The week in Israel was very special to her. Her den is decorated with pictures from many parts of the world. Her relationship with Hillcrest church in Arlington occupied much of her life and she thoroughly loved each and every member. The hours she spent in their company in various ways whether it be in teaching, sitting in class, sitting in the pew or working in the kitchen was a joy to her. She has said that the person she became was very much influenced by Hillcrest church and all that it implies. She is survived by her husband of over seventy years, her brother, Elrey Ash and wife Livvy, her daughter Anne Haley and husband David who have done great service in her needs especially during the last few weeks.
