Charles Enoch Holmes Gaunt II

Charles Enoch Holmes Gaunt II, age 98, passed away peacefully on February 23rd at Transitions LifeCare Hospice Home in Raleigh. Known as “PAPAW,” to his family, he was born on December 16th, 1926 in Little Rock, Arkansas. He lived for many years in Memphis, TN, Arlington, TX and Raleigh, NC. Charles lived a long and fulfilling life full of faith. He was married to his wife Doris Louise Barentine Gaunt for 73 wonderful years and created a legacy of of 3 children, 7 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Doris and daughter Andrea and is survived by his two sons, Richard and Edward Gaunt.

Charles served his country with the US Army in 1944. After the Army, he worked in Arkansas and Louisiana and then settled in Memphis, TN for over 20 years. In 1984, he and Doris moved to Arlington, TX where he worked for Moore Funeral Home and Cemetery for over 22 years. He even continued to work part time for several years prior to moving to Raleigh, NC to live with his Daughter Andrea and husband Dan.

Throughout his life, Charles was a devoted member of his church wherever he lived often serving as a Deacon. He tithed his entire life even long after he was unable to attend his church . He gave to dozens of charities monthly and was always a generous soul who would go far out of his way to help others in need.

Charles will be remembered for his love of the Bible, his unending patience, calm demeanor and a love of anything Chocolate. He left an unparalleled work ethic he passed on to his children and grandchildren. He touched the lives of many with his compassion and love.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2025, 2:00pm in the Chapel of Mitchell Funeral Home. The family will receive visitors prior to the service beginning at 1:00pm. Entombment will follow in Raleigh Memorial Park Mausoleum.

In lieu of flowers, Charles would ask that you pick up the phone and call a loved one you haven’t spoken to recently or go visit them and give them a long hug.
