Emmet "Buck" Layton, age 96, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 12, 2025, in Mansfield, Texas, surrounded by his loving family. Born on April 20, 1929, in Claypool, Oklahoma, to Earnest Henry Layton and Loraine McKay, Buck lived a full and beautiful life defined by hard work, generosity, and deep devotion to his family.
Buck was raised in Claypool before moving to Vernon, Texas. He later settled in Arlington, where he built a life rooted in love and resilience alongside his beloved wife, Sally Hollingsworth Layton. Together they raised five children and created a home where love was abundant, laughter was frequent, and everyone felt welcome.
A man of many talents and tireless work ethic, Buck began his career working in the fields, then roofing alongside his brothers—a craft he not only mastered but found joy in sharing with others. He later joined General Motors, where he dedicated over 30 years of service before retiring. Known for his ability to fix just about anything and build everything from the ground up, Buck was always willing to lend a hand or offer his wisdom to anyone in need.
Above all, Buck will be remembered for his kind heart, humble spirit, and unwavering love for his family. He had a quiet strength and a gentle soul that left an impression on everyone who knew him. He lived each day with gratitude, generosity, and purpose, and he gave his love freely-to his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and beyond. There wasn't a person who met him who didn't walk away feeling better for it.
Buck was preceded in death by his loving wife, Sally; his sons, Howard and Phillip Layton; his siblings, Clarence, Leon, Boone, Wayne, Helen, and Wanda; and his grandchildren, Curtis, Byron, and Joslyn Layton.
He is survived by his son David Layton and wife Melanie; his daughter Beccy Deese and husband Dewayne; his daughter Valerie Rowe and husband Keith; 16 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren. His legacy of love, kindness, and quiet strength lives on in each of them.
