On Tuesday, March 4, 2025, Janice Arlene Overstreet Hambrick went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and was welcomed into Heaven into His loving arms. She was reunited with her husband of almost 60 years, Clifford Benjamin Hambrick and her son, Steven Paul Hambrick.
Janice was born on February 27, 1933 in Rudy, Arkansas, to Lowery Lee Overstreet and Vida Marie Wilson Overstreet. She was the eighth child of 10 and was, by several years, the last living member of her original, immediate family.
She grew up in Fort Smith, Arkansas where she graduated from Northside High School in 1951. In January, 1952, at a church New Year’s Eve party, she met the love of her life, PVT Clifford Hambrick who was stationed at Camp Chaffee in Fort Smith. They started attending First Baptist Church of Fort Smith, where they came to know Christ under the leadership of J. Harold Smith. Dr. Smith married them the following October 12th and they began their life-long ministry of telling others about the Lord and serving Him.
Cliff and Janice first moved to Wichita Falls, Texas, after they married, then on to Whitesboro, Texas where Janice worked at J.C. Penney and Cliff taught English in the local high school. In November, 1954, they welcomed their son, Steven Paul, and in April, 1958, they welcomed their daughter, Cynthia Ann. During those years, the Lord brought many Godly people into their lives to nurture them in the faith and love this little family.
In 1961, the family moved to Arlington, Texas because of Cliff’s new job at General Motors. Janice started working at Arlington State College (now known as The University of Texas at Arlington) in the Placement Office. In 1965, she became the first Administrative Assistant to the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts. She retired after 32 years in the same office. She had a life-long legacy at UTA and many people still remember her to this day with fondness and respect.
When the Hambricks moved to Arlington, they joined Bethel Baptist Church. Janice was heavily involved in teaching Sunday School, singing in the choir, singing solos, duets, and her favorite, The Rejoicers Trio with her daughter, Cindy, and best friend, Lou Howard. She always served faithfully alongside her husband as he taught a couples Bible class. They made many wonderful friends through the years and hosted many gatherings in their home. Janice was known as “the life of the party!”
After serving faithfully for 43 years at Bethel Baptist Church, they joined Lamar Baptist Church in Arlington where Janice continued singing in the choir and supporting Cliff in his ministry. She made many wonderful friends, and found her “twin,” Janice Marlene. This precious woman came to visit Janice at Brookdale almost every week for the nearly three years she was there. She was such a huge blessing to Janice and the family. Janice remained a member of Lamar Baptist Church until God called her home.
During the early years, they, along with their children, made many trips back to her hometown of Fort Smith, Arkansas to visit family, as well as travels around Texas. They also, with their church friends, traveled to Germany, The Holy Land, England, and even went on a Caribbean Cruise. They loved life and lived it well.
The Lord blessed Cliff and Janice with four grandchildren, Holly, Simmie, Christopher and Ashley, as well as nine great-grandchildren. Janice especially loved her grandchildren, always wanting to do things for them, take them places, support their interests and she was always trying to give them money. Janice and Ashley had a very special bond. Ashley had a closeness unlike any other with her Mamaw and was regularly referred to as her Mini-Me. Janice and Cliff loved all of their grandchildren so much and greatly cherished any time they had with them.
When the Lord called Cliff home 13 years ago, life as Janice knew it changed completely, but because of her strong faith in the Lord, she continued to trust in Jesus to guide her through each and every day. Her faith never waivered and she loved the Lord completely. She quoted her favorite verse, Romans 8:28, often, “And we know that
all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose.” She lived by His promises and never questioned Him. Even as the ugly disease of Alzheimer’s threatened to take her mind, she often quoted Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.” Janice spent her last years at Brookdale Senior Living, and ultimately in Memory Care where she was loved and well-cared for by a wonderful staff. For the last year, she was also cared for by St. Gabriel’s Hospice. They went the extra mile in loving and caring for her, and were with the family when she passed away. She loved the Lord and lived for Him as long as her mind allowed. She did well and was truly a good and faithful servant. She will be greatly missed.
Janice is survived by her daughter, Cindy Graves and husband, Mark, granddaughter, Ashley Dickey, grandson, Christopher Wilder and wife Carley, daughter-in-law, Linda Hambrick, granddaughter Holly Lang and husband Steve, granddaughter Simmie Myers and husband, Ashton, as well as great-grandchildren, Abigail and Jonathan Dickey, Chloe and Clifford Wilder, Aubrey, Anna Kate and Beau Lang, Hensley and Adalynn Myers.
A visitation for Janice will be held Friday, March 7, 2025 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Moore Funeral Home, 1219 North Davis Drive, Arlington, TX 76012. A funeral service will occur Saturday, March 8, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Moore Funeral Home.
