Geraldine Sue Maurer, 83, of Arlington, Texas, passed away peacefully on March 2, 2018. “Jerrye Sue” to family and friends was born on November 22, 1934, in Memphis, Tennessee.
Growing up in Arlington, Texas, Jerrye Sue spent many weekend and summer time days and nights with her fun loving cousins riding bikes and playing at their Grandparent’s home, often ending with a treat of homemade ice cream and “cornbread cake.” From an early age, she had a sense of adventure and loved to travel. While her family was stationed in Germany, she and her brother, Grover, attended High School in Heidelberg. They both had a grand time traveling throughout Europe. Also in her youth, she had a love for horses and all things equestrian, taking English style horseback riding classes while attending North Texas State University.
She lived for a while in San Diego, California but settled back in Arlington where she worked at Bell Helicopter and then in a local government position during the years before finally retiring. Like her mother and her grandmother, Jerrye Sue loved gardening and spent many days tending her flowers and transforming her back yard into a beautiful peaceful retreat. Also, spanning some nine decades, Jerrye Sue’s grandmother, then her mother, then herself, faithfully attended and worshipped at the First Christian Church in Arlington.
In her later years, she was dedicated to taking exceptional, loving care of her aging mother, the family matriarch, Olive Margaret (“Oddie” Snider) Maurer. This love and devotion to her mother in her golden years is one of her “hallmark accomplishments.” While those who knew Jerrye Sue marveled at her inner strength and resolve during that time, she simply referred to it all as “an honor.”
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lt. Col. Robert R. Maurer and Olive Maurer, and in the spring of 2016, by her older brother, Grover Godfrey Maurer, who was the family patriarch and protector. She is survived by her nephew, Ward Maurer and her nieces, Valerie and her husband Saki Mawi, Tracey and her husband Adam Poncio, and her grand nephew and niece Alexander and Elizabeth Poncio. She is also survived by many close cousins, companions Ruben and Diana Sauceda and numerous church friends in the Arlington and surrounding communities.
Jerrye Sue was a kind and gentle soul and graced us for years with that most unique “giggle laugh” of hers---that we all loved so much and will so painfully miss…
