Hi John,

I am writing a quick note to say I thought about you today while in the office (lovely, always working, right?). 

You were always so friendly and had the most genuine smile and conversation. 

Very few like you in the world. VERY FEW. 

Miss you.

I met John at Shackleford  Jr High. Those days are etched so deep in my mind. John was such a kind and funny guy! We paled around through Jr high and into high school.  Movies and parties, such fun times. 

I am beyond sad to hear of his untimely passing. While keeping up with him on FB, I  loved seeing his adventures with his dear friends. My heart goes out to them and his sweet family. 

Prayers and Peace to all the people he touched with his bright smile, love and charm.
John, you will be missed my friend.

I first met John back in 2013 when he joined a large mosaic project I started for Black Swan Saloon in Deep Ellum. I remember exactly when John arrived with his close friends Jim, Donna and Ande. His kindness and warmth from the first time I shook his hand that day shone through, and we remained good friends from that day on. John went on to work on five more large mosaic projects, all of which are  seen by thousands of people every day.
I loved John’s sense of humor, he loved a good joke and he always laughed at my crude puns and innuendoes. I will miss him every day.


With great sadness, I offer my condolences to friends and family.  Although there is no right time to ever say good bye, we know that God calls his children home at his will and sometimes when we least expect it. I will remember John for a lifetime. He was always so happy and positive. While working together at Clarion for over 13 years, I can still see his smiling face walking down the halls. He never failed to ask me how my weekend was or to joke about wishing the weekends were longer. John you will be missed more than you know, but want to say thank you for blessing us with your joy each and every day.  

Ron, Wanda, Becky, and Family, Please accept our deepest sympathies.  Words are so very inadequate at such a time as this.  Know that you all are being remembered in both thought and prayer during this difficult time.

I met John in junior high school, a Texas history class. His sense of humor  caught my attention. Unbeknownst to our poor teacher, he would pull very small pieces of lint from his tube socks and blow it into the air.   Our teacher would make different comments about poor air quality, possible asbestos and John’s laugh was simply infectious.   This memory led to one of our favorite “inside jokes “— even now in our 50’s, if we were doing something juvenile, we would say,  “it’s fun to be in junior high.”  Over the years, we shared an interest in music and  attended countless concerts. We were roommates for all four years at Baylor and he had the misfortune of listening to me play guitar. However, John was always  supportive  and  made any stressful time endurable with his gracious ways.    He had the uncanny way of bringing  out the best in you.   I am forever grateful for knowing him and his family.   

John and I became friends when we were freshmen at Baylor's Hankamer School of Business in 1985. Brainy and disciplined - John helped me to focus and pay adequate attention to my school work. Athletic - we motivated one another to jog around campus to de-stress after class. Zany and fun - he was a great prankster, dance club partner, and friend for life.
When I departed Texas for Peace Corps service in 1994, John gifted me a little green glass frog - a safe-return travel charm from some Japanese tradition. The glass green frog went with me to Poland and has held a post in my homes since then. Each time I see that frog I am grateful for my friend, and amused with memories of our times together. In spirit, I gift John a frog token as his soul returns safely to the spiritual realm.  John, you are loved!

I worked with John for many years. He and I started at Clarion Partners  at the same time (about 13 years ago). John was one of the most genuine individuals I have known.  When he asked how I was doing, I know he was truly interested in my response. His smile would light up any room. 
I want everyone to know that even in his professional world, he made personal connections and left a legacy of positivity and authenticity.  John, you will be missed.


John Norris was a constant presence in my grade school life.  I think we were in every class together throughout our years at Berta Mae Pope Elementary School.  He was smart, athletic, and fun-loving.  I remember, too, that his handwriting was great! And when the teachers hung up our art projects I always envied his. He loved to laugh at silly things.  I recall that the Bugaloos television show was one of the things that cracked him up when we were kids.

I enjoyed his family very much.  His father, Ron, had a boat on lake Arlington, and I remember him teaching me to water ski.  His mom, Wanda, was always kind to me.  And his sister, Becky, was the quintessential cool older sister. In the summer time, John and I and a few of our friends all got season passes to Six Flags, and his parents or mine would drop us off in the morning and pick us up in the late afternoon.  We would spend all day sweating in the sun, cooling off on the Log Ride, or Spelunker’s Cave, and riding the Shock Wave as many times as we could.   Life in Arlington in the late 70s  for kids like John and me was a bit of a dream.

We drifted apart somewhat by high school, but we always remained friends.  John was one of the good guys, always.  I was so glad to reconnect with him, and with so many friends, at our 10-year high school reunion, and he and I kept in touch with one another online throughout these Facebook years thereafter. I regret, though, that we did not stay in closer touch.

That John has left us is so hard to accept.  He is such a force of kindness and goodness that his absence is frightening.  I feel a void in my heart.  With all of his friends and family, I surely mourn him  and miss him very much.  I cannot be there on Monday, but I am there in spirit, wishing our friend John peace, and sending my love to all of you.

John was quick to smile and quick to laugh. He had the gift of putting people at ease and engaging them in conversation. It was his way of overcoming his own shyness, and his friends loved him for that. John was a dedicated and reliable employee at his job.   He was the kind of guy you would want as your co-worker, your neighbor, or your best friend. As a spiritual person, he expressed a love of humanity through his actions and his deeds.  He was a thoughtful person but he could also be somewhat of a prankster.   Over the years John traveled extensively with his travel buddies:  Ande Sullivan, Donna Smith, and myself.  He was known to make great bourbon cocktails and a good pot of coffee. He could pick out the best restaurant for the right occasion and you could not beat him in any game of name that song and artist--he knew music.  In the past few years, John enjoyed working on several large mosaic art projects in Deep Ellum with artist Steve Hunter and other friends. John loved the Big Bend area and quiet times at Cedar Creek Lake.  I speak for all who knew John in saying that we have lost a true friend and loving brother and son. We have all been blessed by his wonderful life, and we have all learned from his passing to take time to be kind to one another.
