Joy was born in Potosi. She married Oren Carroll Fry in 1947 in Fayetteville, Ark. She was very proud of her two daughters, Anita Fry Handy and Sandra Fry Nealy, and Sandra's husband, Chauncey Nealy. The joy of her life was her grandson, Chris Handy, and his wife, Bethany Bernal Handy, of Fort Worth.
Joy worked for over 30 years for U-Haul. She excelled at her job and loved both her coworkers and friends who were rental dealers across Texas, Oklahoma and Arizona. After her retirement, Joy became a committed community volunteer and donated her time to the Women's Shelter (now Safehaven) and Arlington Urban Ministries. In 2000, she was honored as Volunteer of the Year for the Women's Shelter.
A dedicated Christian, Joy was a longtime member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Arlington, where she was a member of the Lydia Circle and Keenagers. Joy cheered for the Texas Rangers baseball team and planned her schedule around their games.
Joy had a special relationship with her twin sister, June Vaughn, and June's husband, Robert Vaughn. They were best friends and saw or spoke to each other daily until June and Robert moved to Corpus Christie where they live with their son.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Martha Lois Drake and Henry Etheredge; stepfather, Jake Drake; siblings, Earl Etheredge, Glenn Etheredge, Susie Oakley; and sister-in-law, Vivian Doerr.
