On August 26, 1939, Kathryn was born in Flint, Michigan, to Kenneth and Bette Cuthbertson. Kathryn moved to Texas at the age of 6 and graduated from Sunset High School in Oak Cliff in 1957. She graduated from the University of Texas Arlington with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing in 1974. She was very proud of obtaining her nursing license, taking the test only once, passing with top scores. Kathryn worked in the coronary care unit at Methodist Hospital in Dallas as Head Nurse. In addition, she worked in various units at Parkland as well. She maintained her license, even after retirement. She was a wonderful and caring nurse.
Kathryn was an accomplished pianist who loved to play for her family, especially during Christmas. She loved to have the grandchildren sit in her lap and play along. During the grandchildren’s older years, she loved to hold band meetings where she regularly had to correct them as they loved to occasionally play wrong notes just to get her to give them “that” look.
Kathryn was an avid reader, having read countless books keeping journals documenting the titles and dates she read them. She had numerous library cards as she was running out of books to read at each location. She also had an extensive library at home, where she would write in the inside cover of her books each start and finish date.
Kathryn loved to have family gatherings where she would cook a feast, that she said, would be gone in a blink of the eye. We always looked forward to her graham cracker cookies, cinnamon rolls, and brownies. After dinner we would watch movies, tell stories, and laugh and the grandchildren would lay on blankets that she had made. She would make them “nana’s chocolate milk”, in sippy cups, making sure they had a good grip on them, well after the grandchildren had outgrown them. They obliged because they loved to please their nana and knew she didn’t like a mess.
Kathryn loved her gardens, which she kept meticulous with loving hands; they were amazing. She loved her statue of Mary in her courtyard, where she planted flowers around the base each season. She was a wonderful gardener.
Kathryn was a devout Catholic and attended Most Blessed Sacrament Church in Arlington, TX. Kathryn was involved in many activities throughout the Fort Worth diocese over the years, such as fundraisers for St. Maria Goretti Catholic School, and social groups at St. Michael’s Church and St. Andrews just to name a few. She attended mass regularly. She loved Father Dennis, who later served at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and would go there just to hear his homily.
Kathryn had a zest for life and told all her children that each decade brought new and exciting adventures. She was a world traveler having travelled through the United States, Europe, Canada and Mexico and many islands throughout the world, she experienced more of the world than most, and loved talking about her many wonderful adventures.
Kathryn is survived by sons, James Lackey and Jon Lackey and daughter-in-law, Shellie Lackey, daughter Melanie Crawford-Madanski and son-in-law, Daniel Madanski, brother Patrick Cuthbertson and grandchildren James Sargetis, Bailey Lackey, Kristen Lackey, Dawson Lackey, James Lackey, Ava Madanski, Sophie Madanski, and Evan Madanski. She was preceded in death by her loving parents and beautiful daughter, Jill Mathison.
Kathryn will be missed by all who knew her as she was such a wonderful mama, nana, sister, and friend.
