Dr. Kou-Laung Lin, 75, passed away on October 20, 2021. He was born in Chunpu, Chiayi, Taiwan on September 25, 1946, to Chang and Young Lin as the sixth of eight children, having four brothers and three sisters.
He graduated from National Taiwan University in Taipei, Taiwan with a degree in chemical engineering in 1968. In 1969, he made his first trip across the Pacific Ocean to the United States to attend graduate school at Rice University, where he earned his PhD in chemical engineering in 1974 with the thesis “The Flow of Axisymmetric Suspended Objects in Capillaries”. Propelled by his love of mathematics, he thrived in his first job as an engineer of primary flow elements and then used this experience to start his own engineering and manufacturing company, Flow-Lin Corporation, in Kennedale, Texas, in 1987. Flow-Lin’s success was a testament to Dr. Lin’s industriousness.
He married his wife Su-Mei in 1972, and in 1974, they moved to Arlington, Texas, where his three children, James, Julie, and Justin, were born and raised. Kou-Laung loved his native country Taiwan and championed its culture and history as a nation for all his life, but he also loved his new life in America and became a U.S. citizen in 1982.
Kou-Laung loved music and was always singing or whistling wherever he went, never without a huge smile. He was warm, boisterous, and very generous, and he spent much of his free time championing Taiwanese causes, helping the Taiwanese Association of America DFW Chapter in every role, including multiple terms as president, and always volunteering to manage the audio-visual equipment at all events. He was a passionate karaoke aficionado, but he also enjoyed choral singing in his deep bass voice. He founded the Formosa Chorus in 2001 with friends, and this quickly became his favorite pastime.
Kou-Laung’s biggest joy was his family. He adored his wife Su-Mei, and he could not stand to be away from her for too long. Multiple times a day, his children grew up hearing him say “I love you” in his sing-song way, always touching their heads or face or squeezing their shoulders. How lucky that his grandchildren got to experience this, too. He was so proud of his six grandchildren Avery, Maya, James, Marcus, Jovie, and Jeremy – they were the light of his life.
Kou-Laung is survived by his wife Su-Mei Lin, his son Justin Lin and his wife Jennifer, his daughter Julie Lin and her husband Richard Rosalez, his daughter-in-law Alice Kim, and his grandchildren Jovie and Jeremy Lin, Maya and Marcus Rosalez, and Avery and James Lin. He was preceded in death by his son James Lin. In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family requests donations to any charity. A come-and-go Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 2, from 9:00 am until 10:00 am at Moore Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens (1219 N. Davis Drive, Arlington TX 76012). A Memorial Service will be held at a future date that has yet to be determined so that his family and friends may all gather and honor his memory.
