Vernelle was born on July 24, 1929 to ranching parents, Carl M. and Johnnie Grelle in Brownwood, Texas. In her youth, she was baptized in the Colorado River in Brown County with the local Baptist church. Vernelle graduated from Howard Payne University and began a career as a school teacher. She lived in Arlington for the majority of her adult life and taught in the school district for 12 years, primarily at Dora E. Nichols Junior High.
Vernelle was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Ancel E. Gilbreath; son, Michael T. Gilbreath, DVM; and sister, Doris DeHay, of Brownwood.
She is survived by her son, Cameron S. Gilbreath; daughter-in-law, Terri L. Gilbreath; grandchildren, Amy Smith and husband, Gabe, Sarah Ponce and husband, Levi, James "Jake" Gilbreath and wife, Sarah, Joseph "Joey" Gilbreath and wife, Jessica, Caleb Gilbreath, Alexander "Alex" Gilbreath, and Corey Gilbreath; eight great-grandchildren; nephews, Dan DeHay and Jeff DeHay; and nieces, Kaci Berry and Dana Krieger.
