

Alvin Ralph Gamboa passed away in his sleep surrounded by loved ones at home on Friday, October 27th 2017 in Bakersfield, California. He was born September 21, 1942 to Genevieve Aguirre Gamboa Barazza and Cenon Gamboa in Los Angeles County Hospital. As a teenager he was on the wrestling and Junior Varsity football teams at East Bakersfield High School. Alvin selflessly served his country as a United States Airman, earning a Bronze Star in Viet Nam. After his return, he worked as an auto body repairer, as an auto body shop manager, and then as a claims adjuster for State Farm Insurance. He earned an Associate Degree at Consumnes River College by taking night and weekend classes despite his long work days.
Al had many interests, creative hobbies, and skills. Later in life he used these skills to become a licensed handyman. He relished the adventure of learning something new, and always possessed a pioneering spirit. He was generous with his time and donated his energies to many meaningful causes including coaching youth sports, as a parent Camp Fire volunteer, working with St. Luke's Garden Club, and as Senior Vice Commander of VFW Post 7216.
His survivors include Sherrell, his loving wife of 54 years; his children Allen and Gabrielle; his grandchildren Christopher, Blaine, and Whitney; his great-grandson Quentin; and his siblings Robert, James, Sandra, and Charles. He was predeceased by his brother Danny. Alvin was a beloved friend, uncle, brother-in-law, cousin, and mentor to many.
His memorial service is on November 8th at 10:00 AM at Hillcrest Mortuary at 9101 Kern Canyon Road, Bakersfield, California.
