After moving to California as a child, Sue’s path was forever changed when she met Ronnie, the love of her life, at just 13 years old. They married at 17 and shared a beautiful life together.
Sue lived life to the fullest and brought joy to everyone she met. She was an avid league bowler for many years, earning countless pins and trophies. She enjoyed bunco nights with her friends, being part of the Red Hat Society, and taking trips to Las Vegas, or any casino where she could play Cleopatra Keno.
Her family and friends will fondly remember her famous grilled cheese sandwiches, pineapple upside-down cake, and sweet tea, which were favorites at family gatherings. Beyond her home, Sue gave her time generously, volunteering with organizations including the Homeless Center and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. She was a member of Ridgeview Community Church.
Most of all, Sue will be remembered as “Grammy” or “Mammy” to all who knew her. She had a way of making everyone feel like family, never meeting a stranger and always offering kindness, laughter, and love.
She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 49 years, Ronnie, her parents Jay and Pearl Mathis, and her siblings Allen, Don, and Bobbie. She was the youngest of the four.
Sue is survived by her devoted daughters, Sheri Johnson, Kelly (James) Story, and Tracy Flaherty, her 39 cherished grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, who were truly the joy of her life, and many friends and extended family members.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, September 5, 2025 at11:30 a.m. at Ridgeview Community Church, 8420 Stine Rd., Bakersfield, California 93313.
Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.
