    When I decided to go into the ministry, Danny was one of the few friends I had who didn’t give me a bad time about it.  He was very supportive. Due to schooling and ministry, Ann and I  moved away from Bakersfield to Colorado and then on to other places.  That kept us from getting together very much.   Occasionally we would meet up and go out to dinner (it seems we went to Woolgrower’s a lot).  But, I always thought of Danny as being one of my best all time friends.  It saddens me deeply to not have kept in better contact with him.

    Danny was the best kind of friend.  He helped and supported me through some tough times (and I hope I did so for him). There was a time or two when we disagreed, but it never affected our relationship as friends.  I appreciate both he and Steve (Agerton) for always making me feel like I was part of the family.  They treated me like a brother.

    Although time and distance had separated us, Danny was like a brother that I knew would always be there, and he would always welcome me as if time and distance had never happened. There really is so much more I could say, but I’ll end with a quote from Proverbs 18:24 – “A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.”

    Thank you Danny for being like “a friend closer than a brother.”

    I have to thank Danny for me meeting my wife, Ann.  She was working at Brock’s at the same time.  Even though I was in my twenties, I was still shy with women, and he encouraged me to ask her out.  The next thing I knew, Ann and I were married and Danny was the best man at our wedding.  For our wedding night, Danny didn’t want my car to get messed up with decorations, so he hid it in a friend’s garage, and borrowed a car from Three-Way Chevrolet (with the idea that he might buy it – which he didn’t), and chauffeured Ann and I all over the place.

    Within the next year or so, me and Ann were in Danny and Jackie’s wedding, getting frustrated along with him because the minister kept calling him “Don,” and not “Dan.”  As I look at some of the pictures of the wedding, I still can’t believe we wore those lime green tuxedos with fluffy shirts.  I even had what was called an “afro” haircut at the time. Wow!  What a sight we were!  But Danny and Jackie made a handsome couple.

    For many years after that the four of us (Danny, Jackie, Ann, and me) did a lot of things together.  Trips to the beach, to the mountains, to Sequoia and Yosemite, and more.  Jackie admits that she wasn’t much into camping, but we had a great time doing it anyway – and we always seemed to laugh so hard we couldn’t breathe.

My Friend Danny Donati
    It’s been too many years since the last time I spoke with Danny.  Danny – that’s what I always knew him by.  The last time we spoke I believe he and Jackie were still living on the coast. Previous to that, we had gotten together for a game of golf.  I still have the putter he gave to me during that game about 20 years ago (and I still use it).  It’s a bit beat up, but every time I think about replacing it, my mind goes to the game we played and all the good times we had together.  It’s kind of funny (yet not funny) - but as I write this I’m realizing how much I miss him even though we haven’t seen each other for a long time.

    Danny and I went to school together through high school.  While during those years we knew each other and occasionally hung out together, but it wasn’t until after I returned from a tour in the Navy that we really struck up our close friendship.  When I returned home after being in the service, I was looking for a job and Danny helped me get one.  I ran into him at what used to be the Brock’s Department Store in the old Valley Plaza Shopping Mall.  He got me a job working with him in the Men’s Clothing Department.  While there, Danny and I developed a “fake” language that sounded like Spanish, but was not understandable – except to us.  We loved talking back and forth and watching people (especially those who could speak Spanish) try to figure out what in the world we were saying.

Danny may you rest in peace...appreciated your kindness, friendship and sense of humor...a gentleman all the way around...you will be missed...may God comfort the family and friends as they grieve.
