

Darrell K. Freeman 1949 - 2009 After fighting a long and hard battle against Melanoma Cancer, Darrell passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on November 12, 2009. He was born in Orange, California, October 24, 1949 and moved to Bakersfield shortly after his birth. Darrell attended various local schools graduating in 1967 from East Bakersfield High School, obtaining a Bachelor's degree and teaching credential from Cal State Bakersfield and a Master's degree from University of Laverne. He also served in the Army Reserves. Darrell taught 36 years with the Bakersfield City School District. He started in 1973 as a teacher at Lincoln Junior High School, went on to be Vice Principal at various schools, and retired in October as a teacher at Walter Stiern Middle School. He loved all aspects of teaching. He is survived by his "advocate" wife of 39 years, Patt; daughter, Lisa Roberson and husband Shannon; son, Jacob and wife Brynn; brother, Randy and wife Kathy; sister, Joelyn Zertuche and husband Zane; and his grandchildren, who he dearly loved, Tyler, Corinne, Caleb, Ashlie, and Bryndon. He is survived by numerous other family members, and friends whom he considered family. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Ravi Patel, Dr. Raj Patel, the staff at CBCC, Hoffmann Hospice and everyone who cared for Darrell. Services will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Chapel, on Saturday, November 21st, at 1:00 p.m. Darrell is and always will be a hero in our eyes. He fought HIS cancer with dignity and grace.
