Dollie Meadors Age 93 passed away peacefully in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma Tulsa County at Forrest Hills Rehabilitation Facility. She has lived with her youngest son Jeffrey and Wife Kimberly for the past two years.
Dollie was born in Pensacola, Florida at home overlooking Bayou Texar Pensacola Bay. She was the youngest of Five children born to Ida Williams Nell and Brady Nell. She was raised near the Sugar White Sand, Sea Oats, and beautiful blue/green waters of the Gulf of Mexico which she loved and talked about almost daily throughout her life.
Brady’s untimely death when Dollie was only ten years old, affected her deeply lasting her lifetime. She said Brady was a kind, and generous man of faith, hardworking, loving, and helped others in their time of need. Dollie possessed these attributes and lived her life with these values passing them on to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Dollies Mother Ida (widowed) and of little means was forced to move from Pensacola to a small shack in the woods of North Florida at Laurel Hill near the Alabama line. Dollie, her mother, and siblings Walter and Faye had no indoor toilet, no electricity, nor running water. Life was hard then, but the family survived with help from her Aunt Bessie’s family living nearby, with prayer, self-reliance, and resilience.
When Dollie turned 13 the family decided that she was not going to be a “Country Hick” so they put her on a bus, alone, bound for Southside Chicago to live with her aunt, hoping that Dollie would get a broader cultural life experience. Dollie lived there for one and a half years, then returned to Pensacola where her mom had resettled.
At age 15 Dollie went on a Blind date with her sister Faye and Faye’s Boyfriend. Dollies date was a strong handsome Navy man named Algie “Buddy” Meadors who was stationed in Pensacola. Al was an Arkansas Native whose family migrated to California during the Great Depression/Dust Bowl. After another date or two, love struck them, and they were married on January 13, 1945, at Corry Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Florida. In January 1946, they hitchhiked from Pensacola to Weedpatch, California to live near Al’s family.
As a young woman, Dollie worked at various jobs, at JCPenney selling clothing, Modeling and Designing Clothing. She also worked at the Kern County Employees Association and Kern Federal Credit Union, retiring as a Loan Supervisor in 1996.
Dollies first child Michael was born in 1950 followed by Jeffrey in 1954. She was an overprotective, loving, doting mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She immersed herself fully (sometimes too much) into everyone’s lives, providing instruction, instilling God centered values while teaching them to be strong in this world by showing Grace and resilience. She had a wonderful and unique sense of humor that would go right up to the line and often over.
She was a great bake from scratch cook, a “foodie” that liked her food crisp, deep fried, Southern and Okie style. She loved her Mexicali, hot fudge sundaes from Dewars, and Smith’s baker square donuts with lite icing and the green plump raisins inside.
Dollie was preceded in death by husband Algie Meadors (2013), her parents Ida and Brady Nell, and all her siblings, brothers Brady Nell Jr., Richard Kilpatrick, Faye Scholz Evans, and Walter Nell.
Dollie is survived by her sons Michael (Jody) Meadors, Jeffrey (Kimberly) Meadors; Two Granddaughters, Courtney (Patrick Tippit), Sarah (Braden) Bertrand, Two Grandsons, Jason (Jenny) Meadors, Nick (Jenn) Meadors; Six Great Grandchildren: Jackson, Grant, and Ella Meadors; Jacob and Jared Tippit; Hudson Meadors; Lincoln and Everett Bertrand and several nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Doug Keifer, Administrator at Forrest Hills Rehabilitation and his staff for their care, concern, and love for Dollie during her stay.
Visitation will be held on Thursday October 27, 2022, from 4pm to 7pm. Graveside Service will be held on Saturday October 29, 2022, at 9am at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Mortuary 9101 Kern Canyon Road Bakersfield, California.
