Don was born in Taft, California, and spent his life building, creating, teaching, and serving. He graduated from Taft Union High School, earned his associate degree from Taft Community College, and completed his bachelor’s degree in Underwater Marine Technology and Biology at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
He dedicated 51 years to the oil and gas industry, working as a welder, underwater welder diver, supervisor, and chief inspector. Beyond his career, Don served his community as a coach, mentor, EMT, scuba instructor, and volunteer. He shared his love of the outdoors, the ocean, and craftsmanship with anyone willing to learn.
A lifelong Christian, Don began his faith journey at St. Andrew’s Church in Taft, was married at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Bakersfield, and remained a devoted member of Trinity Anglican Church of Bakersfield until his passing.
He is survived by his wife, Diane; his sons Donald (Lori), Justin, and Paul (Devon); and his grandchildren Ava, Emma, Malina, and Oliver. He is also survived by Barbara Steward, Aunt Joan Smith, and his siblings Gail, Allen, Christa, Vanessa, and Daniel, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members and friends.
Don is survived by his beloved pets—dogs Betsy, Duke, Bella, and Honey, and his tortoise Hercules—and is reunited with dogs Bruce, Star, and Bernard, and cats Burt, Murphy, Zorro, and Eli.
