Doug graduated from Redwood High School in Visalia and attended classes at College of the Sequoias.
Doug had a great work ethic which he passed along to all his children and grandchildren. He started working at Kaweah Delta Hospital when he was in High School. During the summer while he was attending college he worked in the back country in Sequoia National Park building and maintaining hiking trails. Shortly before he got married he managed the Beacon Station in Lemoore, CA. He then became the manager of the new Shell Service Station at 10th and Grangeville in Hanford, CA. In 1971 Doug went to work for Burnett Construction and that job brought him to Bakersfield and working in the Oilfields. After working for Burnett for a while he decided that he could do it better and so he went into business with his welder in D & H Construction. After a couple of years they closed the business. In 1979 Doug started his own business Wegener Construction. Due to failing health Doug closed the business in 1997. After that he took on the most rewarding job of his life, babysitting and spending time with his grandchildren. He delighted in going to all their competitions and helping them with their school projects. He even was awarded the honor of Volunteer of the Year at Mt Vernon School because of his many volunteer hours at Santa’s Secret Shop, book fairs, school carnivals and PTA.
Doug attended Calvary Bible Church now Resurrection Church for over 30 years. Because of recent health problems Doug and Beverly started attending the Kern City Community Church because it was close to home and started later so it was much easier for him to attend. He quickly fell in love with pastor and the members of the church.
After Doug’s 2nd Open Heart Surgery in 1998 he joined Mended Heart’s Chapter 77. He held almost every office on the board and spent many hours visiting other heart patients.
Doug loved breakfast and the special time he had for so many years meeting his friends Mike Clark and Jerry Hale for breakfast every week.
Services will be held at Resurrection Church, 48 Manor Street, Bakersfield, CA on October 17 at 10:00 am in the chapel.
