Joel Cardenas Garrido was born on July 9th, 1985 to Margarita and Rojelio Garrido. He was the 5th of 8 children. As a kid, he played soccer; a perfect outlet for his hyperactive personality. He enjoyed hanging out with friends, playing with his little sisters and drawing. He was very smart, often receiving honor-roll at school, landing on the principal's list and continuing onto the Gifted and Talented Education Program.
He was the first child of the Garrido family to take advanced placement classes in high school. His afterschool activities included playing Nintendo and weight lifting with his older brothers. His first job was at the local swapmeet working alongside his parents. He graduated from Bakersfield High School in 2003 and attended Cal State Bakersfield to major in business. In 2008, he left school due to a sudden decline in health.
For the next 14 years, he struggled with physical pain, something he would try to escape mentally through literature. He walked to the local library as often as his body could allow. He read books on philosophy, spirituality, UFO’s, Galileo and others. He watched videos on meditation to calm his mental anguish. His time at home was also spent supporting his nieces and nephews with school. One of his greatest contributions was mentoring and tutoring nearly all of his nieces and nephews.
He was also an avid fan of collegiate football and a huge USC Trojans fan.
In 2017, Founder’s Favorite magazine published one of his poems. He described his soul soaring as the moonlight shine on his face. All fear disappeared and love was only left.
In 2021, despite his worsening illness, he attended his parents 50th wedding anniversary on December 25th. He danced, laughed, and shared great moments together with his family.
On July 25th 2022, Joel Cardenas Garrido succumbed to his illness and died.
