John “Manuel” Catano, 71, a beacon of strength, resilience, and faith, was welcomed home by the Lord on July 25, 2023. His journey began in Visalia California on August 9, 1951, the cherished youngest of five siblings born to Juan and Petra Cataño.
In his early years, John's life took him across California's landscapes as his family, led by a hardworking migrant farm laborer father, traveled across the state following the harvest seasons. Despite the challenges of his early life and personal physical adversities as he was born with feet conditions necessitating multiple surgeries — John's spirit remained unyielding, kind and ready to take on the world.
Although he often went by John or Juan, at home, his family called him Manuel. Once the family settled in Bakersfield, John was able to attend school and graduated from East Bakersfield High School. After school, he had many part time jobs anything from making pizzas, pies and even Chinese food.
He continued studies at Bakersfield College, seeking training as a Psychiatric Technician, This eventually led into the compassionate world of psychiatric care. His esteemed career spanned decades, from Camarillo State Hospital in 1973 to Coalinga State Hospital, from where he retired in 2014.
In 1974, within the halls of Camarillo State Hospital, fate brought John and Evelyn Jeanette Tosti together leading to their union in matrimony on November 15, 1975, a bond that would enrich their lives for nearly 50 years. Together in Springville, they created a haven for their two children, John and Anna, and later celebrated the joys of grandparenthood with their two grandchildren, thanks to Anna and Donnie Plumly.
Retirement saw John channel his energy into community service, becoming an esteemed 4th Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus and offering his skills at St. Anne’s Parish Food Bank. His handyman prowess was legendary both at home and among friends.
While John leaves behind a loving family, including his devoted sister Jesse Santillan, his legacy is not confined to familial ties. Those who had the privilege to know him were touched by his unyielding faith, radiant smile, and generosity. John Cataño was not just a man; he was an embodiment of love and a testament to the strength of the human spirit. He now rests, having lived a life that truly mattered to those around him.
