Joe was born in Colton, OK on July 14, 1925 and grew up as one of three brothers. He served as a Bosun Mate in the U.S. Coast Guard aboard the destroyer USS Rockford during WWII in the Aleutian Islands and as a convoy escort near Russia, before being stationed in Port Angeles, WA, where he met his future wife, Helen, who was also serving in the U.S. Coast Guard. Joe and Helen married after the war in McFarland, CA and settled in Bakersfield where they were happily married for 63 years.
Embarking on a career in the oil industry, Joe hauled fuel for Douglas Oil to Nellis Air Force Base before joining Ed Dixon trucking, and subsequently Clyde Hall Trucking, hauling oil rigs and driving pole trucks. Joe accepted a position with Coastal Engineering Company, which later merged with KBA Engineering, where he worked for over 20 years until his retirement in 1988. Joe and Helen, along with their children enjoyed bowling, boating, fishing and camping, especially at Balch Park.
Joe is preceded in death by his wife, Helen, parents Cecil and Flora, and brother Cloyse. He is survived by his brother Gene (Irene) Bond; his children David (Debra) Bond and Sherrill (Brian) Marshall; six grandchildren Shayna, Christopher, Joseph (Jackie) Schade, Scott, Gabrielle, and Renee; great-grandchildren Savannah, Bailey and Jaxon; and step-grandchildren Danielle Marshall (Nathan) Pratt and Catherine Marshall.
The family would like to thank Dr. David Dougherty for his many years of taking care of Dad, and the staff at Hoffman Hospice for the care and respect they showed Dad in his final days.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made in Joe’s name to Hoffman Hospice in Bakersfield, CA. A graveside funeral service will be held at 2:00pm on April 6th at Hillcrest Memorial Cemetery.
