Marianne Ulrich See, lovingly known as “Nanny”, passed away in her home on Friday, June 7th, 2024 at the age of 85. Marianne is preceded in death by Willi Ulrich (father); Wilhelmine Ulrich (mother); Günther Ulrich (brother); Heinrich Ulrich (brother); Otto William See (husband); Wolodymyr Wyshnewskyj (friend); Stephen Ulrich See (son); Stinky (dog). She is survived by Willi Ulrich (brother); Michael Ulrich (Nephew); Lutz Ulrich (Nephew); Marilyn Kennedy; Calen Campbell; Zara Campbell.
Marianne was born in Ortenberg, Germany on February 8th 1939. She was the fourth and final child of Willi and Wilhelmine Ulrich, and loved dearly by her three older brothers. Marianne often shared stories of her childhood in Germany, many of which detailed early mornings spent in her family’s bakery preparing breads and other baked goods. Later into adulthood, Marianne worked as a caretaker at a nearby castle, which elicited her fascination with royals as well as her appreciation for the finer things in life.
Marianne’s journey to America began when she met the love of her life, United States Army Sergeant First Class, Otto William See. They met outside of Frankfurt, Germany and were married on Thanksgiving, November 1963. After being briefly stationed in Fort Knox, Kentucky, Marianne and Otto were transferred to West Point, New York. There they settled into American life and had their son, Stephen Ulrich See, in 1964. As many other men of the time, Otto was deployed to Vietnam. In 1967, not long after Otto was deployed, Marianne and Stephen relocated to Barstow, California to seek additional support from military friends that were made during their time in West Point.
In April 1968, Marianne learned that her husband, Otto, was an unfortunate casualty of the Vietnam War. Despite her grief and mourning, Marianne chose not to return to Germany. Instead, she honored her husband by remaining in the United States to raise their son. Marianne was very proud of her American citizenship, but also maintained a close connection with her family in Germany.
Throughout Marianne’s lifetime in Barstow, she created many friendships. Wolodymyr Wyshnewskyj, also known as “Willy”, was a close friend with whom Marianne shared many years of her life. They frequently traveled to Nevada to enjoy fine-dining, dancing, and the occasional slot-machine. Willy was a role-model to Marianne’s son, Stephen, as well as the children that Marianne was “Nanny” to.
Marianne formed a close friendship with Marilyn Campbell (Kennedy) in 1987, and she began to help care for her son, Calen Campbell. In 1990, Marilyn’s daughter, Zara Campbell, was born and Marianne continued to care for both Calen and Zara over the course of their childhood. It is this relationship that led to Marianne adorning the name “Nanny” and becoming an integral piece of the Campbell family.
Our close relationship with Nanny continued on for the remainder of her life. She was much more to us than a friend. She was a mother, a grandmother, and a comforting confidant. Words cannot express what Nanny meant to us, and we are deeply saddened by her passing. We will be forever grateful for the time we shared together and will hold our memories close. All that knew and loved Marianne are invited to join us in remembering her life at Mt. View Memorial Park on Tuesday, July 2nd, 2024 at 10 o’clock in the morning. Her final resting place will be beside her beloved son, Stephen.
Wir lieben dich!
