Alfred Joseph Hummer Jr.

Alfred Joseph Hummer Jr. was known as many things to many people. He was a loved one, a friend, and someone special. To family and friends who knew him best, Alfred will be remembered as a very exceptional person.

He was the son of Florence and Alfred Hummer. Alfred grew up in Cleveland Heights, Ohio.

Alfred was raised with three siblings. He had one older brother, Frank, and two younger sisters, Kay and Mary. Alfred was usually involved in all sorts of activities with his siblings. He and his siblings shared many life experiences over the years.

Alfred graduated from Cleveland Heights High School in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, in 1938 and continued his education at a business college majoring in Accounting.

On February 9, 1946 Alfred exchanged wedding vows with Virginia Ruth Hayward at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Hollywood, California. Empathic and loyal, Alfred was committed to making his new family happy.

Alfred worked hard to be a good father to his children and he did his best to fulfill their needs. Alfred was blessed with four children, two sons, Al and Larry and two daughters, Helen and Joanne. Another blessing for Alfred was the gift of two grandchildren, one great grandchild and one great-great grandchild, his grandchildren are Sheri and Duane, great grandchild Krista and great-great grandchild Kailee.

Fortunately, Alfred enjoyed what he did for a living. Showing a strong work ethic, Alfred worked diligently and did his best to succeed in his career. He was employed for 22 years in the Real Estate Department at California Federal from 1964-1986 and he built homes for 18 years in the Cleveland, Ohio area from 1946-1964. Alfred always sought to be a team player, doing what was necessary in order to get the job done.

Alfred was an Army veteran. He was in the Army from March 23, 1942 to January 25, 1946 and spent much of his military service stationed in California. Alfred served during World War II. Through his hard work, he achieved the rank of Technical Sergeant. He received several awards recognizing him for his service, including a American Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal.

Alfred found pleasure in sports. In high school, Alfred played baseball and football. Alfred was also something of a sports fan and enjoyed following his favorite events whenever he had the chance to do so. Tops on his list were Notre Dame and USC football.

Alfred’s faith was important to him. He was baptized Catholic and was a devout Catholic his entire life.

Alfred enjoyed traveling and time away on vacations. It was a chance for him to renew and relax, to visit new places and experience new things. Favorite vacations included going to Yosemite National Park and several trips to Europe.

When Alfred’s retirement finally arrived in 1985, he was well prepared. His new life involved relocating to Silver Lakes in Helendale, California and then to Sun Lakes Country Club in Banning, California. The last 6 1/2 years were at The Lakes in Banning, California. In retirement, he found new pleasure in supervising the building of their home at Silver Lakes.

Alfred passed away on May 10, 2012 at Braswell's Hampton Manor in Yucaipa, California. He is survived by his wife, Virginia; children, Helen Searcy of Banning, Joanne Hummer of San Dimas, Al Hummer of Rancho Cucamonga and Larry Hummer of Glendora; son-in-law, Jerry Searcy of Banning; granddaughter, Sheri Gruett of Alta Loma and grandson, Duane Searcy of Banning; grandson-in-law, Scott Gruett of Alta Loma; great granddaughter, Krista McLaren of Redlands; great-great granddaughter, Kailee Langorica of Redlands; and sisters, Kay Fox of Apple Valley and Mary Sawhill of Banning; and brother-in-law, Richard Sawhill of Banning. He was preceded in death by his father, Alfred Hummer; mother, Florence Hummer; brother, Frank Hummer; sister-in-law, Eileen Hummer; and brother-in-law, Ray Fox. Services were held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Church 1234 Palm Avenue, Beaumont, California 92223. Alfred was laid to rest in Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, California.

Simply stated, Alfred was a good and kind person, an individual who will for all time be remembered by his family and friends as being a caring and giving person, someone who was a vital part of their lives. Alfred leaves behind him a legacy of life-long friendships and many cherished memories. Everyone whose life he touched will always remember Alfred Joseph Hummer Jr.
