Born in Los Angeles, CA. July 27, 1948
Died in Beaumont, CA December 13, 2022, 1:24am at home of ovarian and peritoneal cancers.
Susie was the third born to Chuck and Henny Waldner. She grew up in La Crescenta and La Cañada, attending Monte Vista and La Cañada Elementary schools, La Cañada Jr. High and LCHS, graduating in 1966.
Susie joined the Peace Corps after graduating but when she learned she’d been accepted to Pasadena City College, she opted to study instead. Initially, following in the footsteps of her mom, Henrietta, she studied to become a secretary and got her A.A. Degree. But she later realized how much she enjoyed children, so she attended Cal State L.A. and studied education. Her first job was at Pasadena Christian School where she was both an administrator and third grade teacher for 35 years!
She went back to CSULA and while still teaching full time, got her MA in education. She taught evening classes to CSULA students who also wanted to get their MA degree. She retired in 2012 and moved to Beaumont.
Susie was married several times but as the saying goes, “Third time’s the charm!” She married Mitch Harmon on July 29, 1989 and they were married for 33 years. Mitch was her “rock” and the “love of her life.” In retirement, they enjoyed taking walks and hikes, traveling to Europe, going on cruises and keeping up with lifelong
friends and prior colleagues, learning and excelling at line dancing. Susie was also a life-long body surfer who with her three siblings learned to body surf from their dad Chuck Waldner.
Susie’s greatest accomplishment was her deep love for her Savior Jesus Christ. After a painful relationship disappointment in 1968, she invited Jesus to come into her heart. Without even knowing what the Bible says, she heard a voice that night say, “I will never leave you or forsake you!” Susie walked faithfully with Jesus for 54 years. She discipled women, read and studied the Bible daily and was a prayer warrior. So many of her Caring Bridge posts included Scripture, prayer requests and answers to prayer. An example of her CB post: “Since nothing happens by accident and God is in control, I can only continue to trust God.”
Susie is survived by husband Mitch, sisters Joey (and Joe) Dieringer, Kathy Waldner-Gourash (and Andy), nephews Dave Brown and Scott (and Veronica) Dieringer, niece Amy Dollins (and Sean) and grand niece Lily Dollins.
The memorial celebration of her life will be held on Saturday January 28 at 11:00am at Fellowship Church 650 Oak Valley Parkway Beaumont with lunch following. Attendees are requested to wear lively colors (definitely NOT BLACK). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in honor of Susan Harmon.
