Eugene Wilson Stump, Sr., age 70, joined his Heavenly Father on September 3, 2015, following a long illness. He was born on May 29, 1945, in Beaver to parents Alma Eva Stump and father Wilson Wood (stepfather William F. Smith, Jr.) and raised by his grandparents Grover Cleveland and Leila Stump. Eugene graduated from Shady Spring High School in 1965. He started his business, EW Stump Excavating, in 1970 and it was his joy and privilege to operate it until he retired in 2007. Eugene was baptized at Oak Grove Christian Church. He was a member of the Beckley First Baptist. His pastor, Rev. Doc Adkins, and wife Sarah were tremendous sources of support and love, ministering to the family in good times and bad. He loved people and never met a stranger, seeing the good in everyone he met. He served as President of the Crab Orchard/MacArthur Lions Club. Another favorite pastime involved antique cars. He was the proud owner of a 1966 Mustang that won multiple trophies at local car shows. He is survived by Jennifer Stump, his devoted wife of 46 years; daughter Debra Vaught and husband Christopher of Beckley; son Eugene Stump and wife Stacy of Beckley; grandchildren Ryan and Cooper Vaught and Connor and Brenna Stump; "favorite sister” Mary Catherine Adkins and husband Ruben of Beckley; brother Thomas Smith of Ravenswood; brother Dougal Smith and wife Linda of Stanaford. He also leaves behind numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and other family members. Eugene was blessed with a close circle of steadfast friends including Glenn and Sheila Riffe, Roger and Carol Buckland, Arthur Hatfield and Paul Hutchinson. Billy Burleson was more than a former employee — Eugene loved him like a son. And, his cocker spaniel Willy Jackson was a special companion and truly earned the title of "man's best friend." His family would like to extend special appreciation to a variety of people and organizations who showed particular kindness: the faithful Oak Grove Christian Church members who came to his home every Sunday to deliver communion; attentive caregiver Charlotte Parks; cousin Tommy Stump; the JanCare Ambulance staff who transported him to his dialysis treatments; neighbors Billy Foster, Mike Gouge and Claude Stump who helped in any and every way possible; Raleigh General Hospital; Fresenius Dialysis; and Bowers Hospice House. Services: Visitation will be at Blue Ridge Funeral Home on Monday, September 7th, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The funeral service will be at Blue Ridge Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 8th, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Doc Adkins officiating. Pallbearers for the service are Bob Kiblinger, Tommy Smith, Jimmy Jones, Jimmy Dale Jones, Billy Burleson, Dougal Smith, Basile Summers, and Roger Summers.
