Mary Catherine Buckland

Mary C. Buckland, age 94, of Crab Orchard, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 19, 2020 at the home of her daughter at Sebastian, FL. Born on December 22, 1925 in Crab Orchard, she was the daughter of the late Goff and Lola Snuffer Willis.

Mary was a former employee of the Hub and Vogue store in Beckley, where she stated her job there at the age 16 and retired after 35 years. Mary enjoyed helping other by sitting with the elderly and helping anyone with car rides to doctor’s appointments and / or to the grocery store. She loved cooking for her family and friends, making her famous home-made rolls, which were always a request. She was an avid traveler and her last cruise was a “Jimmy Buffett Cruise”, in which she continued to talk about.

Mary made her home with her daughter, Debbie in Beckley, WV and Nancy in Sebastian, FL during the winter months. She attended the Church of the Brethren until she stopped driving at the age of 90. Mary’s greatest joy was her children and her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Samuel H. “Sam” Buckland; one daughter, Mary Jane Soucy; four brothers, Jennings, Alfred, Frank and Doug Willis; and two sisters, Virginia Buckland and Anna Ray Goss.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Ross Wayne Buckland and wife, Laura of Beckley; four daughters, Nancy Ward and husband, Alan of Sebastian, FL, Linda Schuster and husband, George of Coca Beach, FL, Debbie Connard and husband, Gary of Beckley, and Wendy Buckland Sherman of Yadkinville, NC; seven grandchildren, Chris Buckland and wife, Rebecca of Ozark, AL, Robert Buckland and wife, April of Shady Spring, WV, Jennifer Bethard of Charleston, SC, Chad Ward and wife, Victoria of Boynton Beach, FL, Hannah Sherman of Winston-Salem, NC, Perry Sherman of Winston-Salem, NC and Karyn Soucy of Boynton Beach, FL; eight great-grandchildren, Emma, Samuel and Seth Buckland, Hannah and Nick Feazell, Ella and Colton Bethard, and Isabella Ward; her siblings. Bonnie Keaton of AL, Norma Pauley of DE, Johnny Willis of MD, and Larry Willis of VA; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 am, Tuesday, January 5, 2021 at Blue Ridge Funeral Home. Funeral Services will follow at 11:00 am in the Chapel of Blue Ridge Funeral Home with Pastor Darrell Fuller officiating. Burial will be held in the Christus Garden of Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

In accordance with the current CDC guidelines, the family and the staff of Blue Ridge Funeral Home ask that those who attend the services wear proper facial coverings and practice social distancing at all times.

Honoring Mrs. Buckland as pallbearers will be Sam and Seth Buckland, Perry Sherman, Carl Marler, Alan Ward, and Nick Feazell.
