Omeda Ellen Lucas put on her new body, prepared by God, on February 19, 2021, after an extended illness. “Munner” was born in Maple Meadow, West Virginia, in November of 1934. She was preceded in death by her husband Abriam Lucas after being married 48 years. She married him at age 17, only the third time they saw each other, and she remained true to him for 69 years, before joining him on the streets of gold.
Omeda served faithfully at Akers Baptist Church and in the Maple Meadow Community. She was the first woman firefighter for the Lester Volunteer Fire Department and became a Lieutenant, graduated Paramedic School, was a Den Mother, PTO President, Foster Parent, Sunday School teacher, church secretary, served on state committees for foster parenting, was a short-term missionary in Zimbabwe, Africa, and the list could go on. However, her many accolades weren’t her greatest achievements. She loved well. She loved tangibly. She loved deeply. She served passionately. She prayed unceasingly. She exemplified the love of Christ as she served. Christ touched everyone in her life through her hands. She believed His precepts. She allowed Him to pour her, as that of a drink offering, and her love saturated. The memory of her with her coffee and Bible, every day, before the sun rose, will forever be etched in the minds of her family. To know her was to respect her knowledge and listen to her wisdom. The second pew from the back in Akers Baptist Church was where she sat anytime the church was open. But, she stood strongly for her Lord and Savior every day. She would tell you quickly that she was undeserving of God’s grace but bestowed His grace on all those she knew.
Omeda was preceded in death by her parents, Fred Cook and Mahala Blevins Cook, and her siblings, Eugene Cook, Catherine Patrick, Ovada Milam, Fredith Brunn, and Clifford Cook.
She is survived by her children Steve Lucas, Rocky Lucas, Chris Lucas and Alisa Scher; her grandchildren Zebadiah Lucas, Sonya Lucas, Martin Lucas, Colt Lucas, Haili Scher Thielen, Lucas Scher, Kasey Lucas and Marshal Lucas; her great-grandchildren Trula Lucas, Raylen Lucas and Kaylee Lucas; and her siblings Angel Kane and Claytes Cook.
“Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she smiles at the future. She opens her mouth in wisdom, And the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She watches over the activities of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and bless her; Her husband also, and he praises her, saying: “Many daughters have done nobly, but you excel them all.” Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.” (That was our Mother!)
The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Saturday evening, February 27, 2021 at Blue Ridge Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held Sunday, February 28, 2021 at Akers Baptist Church in Maple Meadow with Ardith Bailey presiding. A graveside service will immediately follow at the family cemetery.
