

Robert “Bob” McVernon Furey, 84, passed away Wednesday, May 6, 2015. Bob was born on March 11, 1931 to the late Vess McVernon and Myrtle Furey. He was a lifetime member of Coal Marsh Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as Trustee and was the oldest living member. Bob was a member of UMWA, and retired from the Westmoreland Coal Company. He proudly served his country in the Army, and was stationed in Germany, Korea, and Austria. Known by his sons’ friends as “Captain Bob”, he loved the outdoors, fishing, camping, and attending every MSU Basketball game that he could. Bob was crazy about car racing and anything with four tires and a steering wheel, and loved his tractor “Old Blue”. In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his brother, Carlos “Buddy” Furey. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Evelyn Furey; sons, Randy Furey and wife, Sandy, Blaine Furey and wife, Katrina, and Michael Furey and wife, Toni; grandchildren, Justin, Olivia, Vess, Matthew, and Jordan; sister, Betty Eubank and husband, Wayne; and several nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Visitation will be held from 12-2pm on Saturday, May 9, 2015 at Blue Ridge Funeral Home with funeral services to follow at 2pm and officiated by Pastor Scott Kennedy. Burial will immediately follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
