He earned his first master’s degree from Memphis State University and later completed a second master’s degree at the University of Central Florida. His professional journey spanned both retail and education, where he touched many lives with his wisdom, patience, and unwavering integrity.
Michael was a devoted husband to Brenda Sexton and a loving father to his three sons: Christopher Sexton, Ryan Sexton, and Eric Sexton. He was also a proud grandfather to eight grandchildren, each of whom brought him immense joy. He is survived by his sister, Anita Gustafson, and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Michael found joy in the simple pleasures of life—reading, fishing, watching football, and spending time with his family and grandchildren. His warmth, humor, and quiet strength left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Reflections from His Sons
From Ryan:
Goodbye, Dad. Thank you for being such an amazing father. I'll never forget you. Thank you for helping me become the person I am today—for teaching me the value of acting with honor and integrity, to always ask questions, and to pursue learning new knowledge. Thank you for always putting family first, even when it meant making sacrifices. You were someone I could talk to, debate with, laugh with, and ponder the future with. Thank you for imparting your tenacity, resilience, and never-give-up attitude to me. Thank you for being there for Mom and my brothers. Thank you for being you. Till we meet again...
From Christopher:
Rest in peace, Dad. Your pillar of strength and wisdom will carry on with your sons and grandchildren. When it's my time to go, I know you will meet me at the great divide. Love you, Dad. Till then, we have the watch.
From Eric:
The hero in my life was my dad. He was more of the tough love, shake-it-off-and-keep-moving-forward type. But he always put his family first, and the sacrifices he made to make sure we had what we needed were one of his core values—values I now use with my own family. No matter how hard life gets, you dig in and keep pushing forward. He would never accept defeat, and he would never back down from a fight.
My dad loved to read and built up a vast amount of knowledge over the years. I could ask him a question and nine out of ten times, he’d have a valid answer—which always amazed me. So here you have a tough, macho-looking man with the Webster dictionary as his brain, a can’t-fail mentality, and a tad of goofy on the side. But he would do anything for his family.
He was also a professional when it came to telling dad jokes and using puns—you know, the real dry one-liners, lol. I will always love my dad and I’m going to miss him greatly. I’m sad that my kids didn’t get more time with my dad, aka “Pops” to the grandkids. But we have plenty of memories to look back on and laugh about. I love you, Dad, and me and my family are going to miss you. I’ll see you again someday, Dad—until then, rest easy and don’t crop dust everyone up there, lol.
Love, your baby son, Eric.
A celebration of Michael’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to https://onemorechild.org/give/ to support children and families in need.
