

Penny Schmidt, 91 of Citrus Springs, Florida died on Thursday, March 28, 2013 in the loving care of her family and HPH Hospice. Penny was born on Tuesday, November 1, 1921 in Hazelton, Pennsylvania to John and Mary Ellen (Costello) Johnson. Penny moved to this area in 1989 from Berlin, New Jersey. She was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. Penny always loved helping others and for over a decade was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars ANMAC Post #6253 volunteering for the community’s ambulance services. She also worked for Virtua Health Systems and was named “Employee of the year” in the early 80’s, a designation of which she was most proud. After moving to Florida, Penny continued serving others volunteering at Citrus Memorial Hospital and the Citizens Patrol Surveillance of the Citrus County Sheriff’s Department. In later years, Penny enjoyed traveling, especially cruising. Her most favorite time was spent with her family, who she considered her greatest life’s achievement.
Survivors include her husband of 66 years, John Schmidt, Sr. of Citrus Springs, Florida; sons, Butch Schmidt and wife Rickey of Clementon, New Jersey, John Schmidt, Jr. and wife Maureen of Citrus Springs, Florida and Bill Schmidt of Flagstaff, Arizona; daughter, Barbara Gilbert and husband Bruce of Orange Park, Florida; brother, Bill Johnson and wife Sally of Berwick, Pennsylvania; sister, Rita McMullen of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; grandchildren, Dwayne, Brian, John, Bill, Aron, Jarrod, Joanne and David; great grandchildren, Dwayne, Nicole, Taylor, Jacob, Luke, Vanessa and Caleb and great great granddaughter, Savannah.
Visitation, Tuesday, April 2, 2013 from 5:00 Pm to 7:00 PM at Fero Funeral Home. Funeral Mass, Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at 11:00 AM at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Citrus Springs, Florida.
