Alma Crim, 96, passed away December 30th after a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 41 years, H. Milton, and her daughter, Melinda Carroll, along with her beloved sisters and brother and her dearest friend, Nancy Hawkins. She is survived by her daughters, Jan McCulloch, and Tracey (Kevin) Lakins; great-grandson, Richard McCulloch and a great-great-granddaughter, Madison McCulloch, along with much loved nieces, nephews and cousins.
Alma was born in Cleburne County, Alabama to a teacher, minister and farmer, Ira Patty, and his wife, Elizabeth Hamrick Patty. She graduated from Alverson-Draughn business college in 1936 and worked as a legal secretary until she married. She was a life-long resident of Birmingham where she was a member of East Lake United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday School when her children were young. She was a long time supporter of Ruffner Mountain Nature Center and worked with other neighbors to prevent apartment development of this unique urban natural environment. She was active for many years in the Railroad Retirees Group; loved to travel and saw many countries; was an excellent cook and loved, above all else, to garden in her yard. She often credited her long and healthy life to the benefits of gardening and fresh air. She loved nature and especially the native birds of Alabama that often made their nests in her yard and enjoyed her feeders. Alma’s love of family and friends sustained her and she had great wit and grace.
Funeral Services will be at Ridout’s Trussville Chapel, Wednesday, January 2nd at 1:00 p.m. visitation followed by a service at 2:00 p.m., Reverend Sally Allocca officiating. Graveside service will be immediate family only.
Her family would like to acknowledge the loving and tender care she received at the end of her life by the staff at Riverchase Retirement Village, Golden Living Riverchase and the nursing and PCA staff of St. Vincent’s 3rd Floor West Wing, along with attending physicians.
Her family believes in lieu of flowers she would have wanted expressions of sympathy made to East Lake United Methodist Church or Ruffner Mountain Nature Center.
