They married on October 21st, 1955 in Dothan, Alabama. They had the first wedding at Ridgecrest Baptist Church.
He later joined the Air Force, where he served during the Korean Conflict. He was stationed at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas before being stationed in Largo, Florida. Dan coached baseball and football in Homewood for over twenty years. He and his longtime friend, Jimmy Neel, were instrumental in getting the fields built at West Homewood Park and for building one of the best sports programs in Birmingham. He brought in players from surrounding areas who would never have had the chance to play. Several of his players went on to play college ball and some are now coaching at the college level.
He loved his alumni, Ashford High School Ashford, Alabama and he worked tirelessly to raise money over the years for scholarships for deserving students.
Dan was a man of few words, but he loved to tell a good story. He loved to talk about his family, especially his grandchildren. He would talk about them to anyone who would listen. He loved The Lord. His faith saw him through life and, most of all, through his long illness.
His wife, June, was his primary care-giver throughout his long illness. She tirelessly and faithfully kept him at home to care for him during this time. She took faithfully vowed “in sickness and in health.” The family would like to thank the loving and compassionate Hospice nursing care that he received from Amedisys.
