
David Edward Giles, 88, died Sunday, June 26, 2016, in his home at Fair Haven Retirement Community in Birmingham, Alabama. David was born on May 16, 1928 to John C. and Edna Giles in Lake Worth, Florida. He graduated from Lake Worth High School in 1947. In 1951, David enlisted and served in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He married his beloved wife, Joyce Underwood on December 27, 1951. After his service, he returned to Lake Worth for a short time, before moving to Atlanta, where he began a 36-year career with Lockheed Georgia Company. David had a servant's heart and was always willing to help anyone in need. He was a Life Deacon and taught Sunday School for over 44 years at Second Ponce De Leon Baptist Church in Atlanta. In 2012, he was honored by Second Ponce de Leon with the Missions Leadership Award for his long service with the Church Builders Mission team. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and sister and his daughter, Elaine Giles Cleveland. He is survived by his wife of 64-four years, Joyce Giles, Birmingham AL; children – Michael (Connie) Giles, Stephen (Ann) Giles, Melissa (Mack) Sheddan, son-in-law Al Cleveland; his grandchildren – David (Alisson) Sheddan, Lori (Will) Rogers, Ryan (Aubrey) Swinson, Erin (Brian) Roberts, Sarah (Jonathan) Newell, Meredith McNamara, Caitlin (Matt) Ferguson, Anna Cleveland, Maureen Sheddan, and Ben (Kayla) Giles; 7 great-grandchildren. A memorial service is planned for 10am Friday, July 1, 2016, in Birmingham, AL at Fair Haven Retirement Community, followed by interment at Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo, Alabama. A second service will be held at 2pm Sunday, July 3, 2016, at Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church in Atlanta, GA.
