Harold Bell Long, Jr., known to friends and family as Pete, was born on September 1, 1935 in New Hope, AL to Harold Bell Long, Sr. and Willa Walls Long. He passed away on May 5, 2022, surrounded by those who loved him best. He was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife of 48 years, Betty Williams Long, one son, Harold Bell Long III, one grandson, Matthew Whatley, and two sisters, Marianne Long and Jeri Long Lyons. He is survived by his three children, Debra Long Whatley, Suzanne Long Brown (David), and Christopher Harold Long (Sha); one sister, Cindy Long Johnson (Jim) of Powell, OH, and one brother William (Bill) Long (Linda) of San Diego, CA; six grandchildren, Casey Long Ford (Steven), Andrew Whatley, Carley Long (Kevin McElrath), Kristin Long, Christopher Whatley, and Kelsey Long Baltzer (Lane); three great-granddaughters Olivia Whidden, Norah Jane Ford, and Rowyn Baltzer, and one great-grandson due in October.
Pete was a very hard worker, who rarely took time off. After graduating from Allendale High School in Allendale, SC, he held many jobs over the years. Pete “retired” from the United States Postal Service while continuing to work part-time in sales at Sears. He went on to work full time at Sears before retiring from a management position. He spent the rest of his retirement years as a tax preparer for H&R Block. He also served time in the National Guard.
Pete loved nothing more than his family and would say that his children and grandchildren were his greatest achievements in life. He never missed an opportunity to help those in need, and through his actions, taught his children and grandchildren to be caring, responsible, and independent.
The family will receive friends who wish to pay tribute to Pete on Sunday, May 8th at Ridouts Trussville Chapel from 5-7 pm for visitation. The funeral will be held on Monday, May 9th at 2 pm. Graveside services to follow at Jefferson Memorial Gardens in Trussville, AL.
