
KITCHINGS, HOWARD 85, formerly of Mountain Brook, died April 7th. He was born on January 2, 1927 in Abbeville, AL. Mr. Kitchings was a 1945 graduate of West End High School in Birmingham where he was President of the entire Student Body. He then earned his degree in Electrical Engineering from Vanderbilt University where he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity and a Golden Gloves Boxer. He served as a Merchant Marine on four ships during WW II, and later in the United States Army. He was a member of Canterbury United Methodist Church, The Club, a past President of the Mountain Brook Lions Club, and in his younger years an avid handball player at the Downtown YMCA. He was the founder and owner of Howard Electric Company.
Mr. Kitchings was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Jacquelyn Joyce Jackson Kitchings (Jackie), formerly of Mountain Brook, AL; his parents, Brewer Caruth Kitchings and Mary Louise Bethune Kitchings, formerly of Hoover, AL; sister, Willie Louise Otradovec, formerly of Pasadena, MD; and brother, Brewer C. Kitchings Jr, formerly of Birmingham, AL. He is survived by his five daughters, Mary Osburne (Robert), Atlanta, GA; Anne Mason Medori (Steve), Springville, AL; Dot Mash, Mountain Brook, AL; Nancy Watson (Alan), Mountain Brook, AL; Wanda Burns (DeWitt) Athens, AL; brother, William Joseph (Bill) Kitchings (Alice), Hoover, AL; sister Neva Yvonne Rasberry, Hoover, AL; 12 grandchilden and 6 great grandchildren. The family would like to give special thanks to his granddaughter, Katie, for the loving help and assistance she provided to her Grandfather and family. Visitation will begin at 1:15pm on Sunday, April 15 followed by the service at 2pm; and burial at Elmwood Cemetery. The family suggests memorials may be made to the Birmingham Humane Society or an animal shelter of your choice.
