

Hugo Heflin Elam, age 96, originally of Addison, Alabama and a resident of the Colonel Robert L. Howard State Veteran's Home in Pell City passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 20, 2025 the day after celebrating his 96th birthday.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Zula Mae Elam; his brothers, William S. "Jack" Elam and Ormond Elam; and his sister, Allene Privett. He is survived by his sister, Mervene Currie; his daughters, Brenda Boggan and Wanda Hobbs (Greg); his grandchildren,Patrick Hobbs (Sarah), Kay Self, Kevin Hobbs (Rachel), and Amanda Jordan (Nathan); his great grandchildren, Noah and Hunter Jordan,Riley and Cole Hobbs, and Sammy Hobbs; and many nieces and nephews.
Hugo proudly served his country in the Korean War as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force, then served as a firefighter with Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service until 1975. He later retired from Walker Drug Company.
Hugo was a former member of Ruhama Baptist Church and Cook Springs Baptist Church.
Hugo was a "people person" and was especially drawn to young people. He coached several boys' baseball teams to championships at Wahouma Park in the late fifties and early sixties, and later coached girls' softball teams and boys' Church softball teams. He was an avid gardener with a genuine green thumb.
While living at the Veteran's home, he loved working jigsaw puzzles, playing bingo,watching the hummingbirds, growing tomatoes and talking to people. But, his greatest love was his family.
A visitation for family and friends will be held on Wednesday July 23 at Ridout's Trussville Chapel at 10 AM immediately followed by a service at 11AM.Burial will follow the Chapel service at Jefferson Memorial Gardens. Lloyd Wright will officiate the service.
