Dr. James Richard Andrews passed away July 22, 2014. A native of Birmingham, he was the son of Joe W. and Naomi Griffin Andrews. He attended Norwood Grammar School, Phillips High Schools and Birmingham Southern College. The military draft caused his withdrawal from college and his assignment to the First Cavalry Division in Fort Riley, Kansas. After basic training with the Horse Cavalry, the division was transferred to Australia where it was mechanized and began its long drive to Japan. Following his honorable discharge, he attended Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. There he earned a B.A. Degree with honors. He then attended Princeton University, obtaining Masters and Doctors Degrees, both with honors. He taught at U.C.L.A in Los Angeles and later at Vanderbilt University. After retiring, he returned to Birmingham. An accomplished linguist of multiple languages, he was widely recognized for his expertise in Nahuatl. Unmarried, he is survived by his brother, Joe W. Andrews Jr. (Ann), two nephews, D. Bruce Andrews and R. Clark Andrews (Kathy), and niece, Sharon A. Sharp (Bobby), two grandnieces and one grandnephew. The family will receive friends from 12:00 Noon until 1:00 Saturday, July 26, 2014 at Elmwood Chapel with a Graveside Service to follow in Elmwood Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers, a gift to a charity of choice is suggested.
