James W. Childers passed from this earth to the arms of his Heavenly Father on Friday, September 14, 2012. Mr. Childers (Jim) was born on December 20, 1923 to Simon Albert Childers and Allie Pearl Whitten Childers. He was raised in Ashland, Mississippi and served in the Navy during World War II. Upon returning from the war, he attended The University of Mississippi, where he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in business administration. He met and married his wife of 55 years, Avaline Patton Childers while they were both teaching at The University of Montevallo. He is survived by his wife, his children, Kathryn Childers Moore (Jeff) and James Whitten Childers, Jr. (Carolyn). He was devoted to his grandchildren Adam Childers Moore (Caitlin), Allie Suzanne Moore and Jacob Anthony Childers and to Jack, his dog. He was retired from Southwestern Publishing Company after 32 years. He was a charter member of Green Valley Baptist Church and he served there for many years teaching Sunday school. He enjoyed hunting, camping, boating, gardening and football, but his true devotion was his family. Visitation will be September 16th at Elmwood Chapel, Birmingham, AL at 5:30-7:30 P.M. Funeral services will be held at Green Valley Baptist Church, Hoover, AL at 11:00. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Alzheimer's research (www.alzca.org) or to Green Valley Baptist Church building fund.
