
HOLCOMB, JAMES DEWEY of Birmingham passed away Tuesday, March 19, 2013. Visitation will be at Wilson Chapel United Methodist Church at 412 Cumberland Drive, Birmingham, AL on Monday, March 25, 2013 at 1:00 P.M. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. immediately after visitation. The Reverend Alex Oberneder will officiate. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Forest Hills Cemetery. Jim was born February 9, 1921 to the late Thomas Foster Holcomb and Josie Elizabeth Ashmore Holcomb Nelson. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the South Pacific as a Chief Petty Officer for the Navy. He married Marilda Sadelia Dockery on January 1, 1946. Jim was a master electrician until his retirement. He was a founding member of Wilson Chapel United Methodist Church in Roebuck Springs where he served Christ for many years. Jim was a family man of whom it can be said, “The greatest gift a father can give his children is to love and respect their mother.” Jim also led his family by example in his Christian faith. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marilda, and his brother, George Bryant Holcomb (Dot). Survivors include brother David Winter Holcomb (Gennell), sisters Sybil Mae Holcomb Beasley (Clarence), Tommie Nelson Beverly (Jim), daughters Judy Cheryl Holcomb Hayes (Sean) of Atlanta, GA, Joy Delya Holcomb Smith (Michael) of Birmingham, AL, and Janey Lucile Holcomb Patty (Norman) of Pelham, AL; son James Christian Holcomb (Tammy) of Montgomery, AL. Jim is also survived by grandchildren Janey Lorraine Smith, Stacey Hogan Gartrell, Michael Gee Smith (Christina), Elizabeth Ashmore Patty, Sean David Smith (Amanda), James Christian Holcomb, Jr. (Sonya), Emily Forbes Patty Corwin (Caleb), Hannah Elise Holcomb, and great-grandchildren Jacob Reese Beshears-Smith and Kimberly Joy Smith. Pallbearers will include Michael Gee Smith, Sean David Smith, James Christian Holcomb, Jr., Caleb James Corwin, Christopher Jarrod Davis, James Hodges Irvin, Michael Clint McInnis and Jacob Reese Beshears-Smith. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wilson Chapel United Methodist Church at 412 Cumberland Drive, Birmingham, AL, 35206.
