November 4, 1934 - June 21, 2025
Jeanette D. Gagliano, 90, of Birmingham Alabama, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2025, in the city where her beautiful journey began.
Born on November 4, 1934, in Birmingham, Jeanette lived a life marked by love, creativity, and deep connection to family, faith, and community. In 1955, she married Anthony Joseph “Lag” Gagliano, with whom she shared 60 devoted years of marriage until his passing in 2015.
Together, Jeanette and Lag built a strong presence in the community through their beloved businesses - West End Creamery and, later, Lag’s Eatery in Homewood. These were more than restaurants; they were places where friends gathered and memories were made.
Jeanette was a devoted member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church, where she found lasting friendship and support through the Minus One group and the church’s Red Hats society. Her neighbors became like sisters, and her weekly visits to the beauty shop were cherished social rituals filled with laughter.
She was endlessly creative, always writing, painting, or reading. Jeanette loved the beach and took great pride in the cottage she and Lag built more than 30 years ago - a place that continues to be a cherished gathering spot for her family.
She was known for her warmth, her open heart, and her ability to make everyone feel welcome. Jeanette never met a stranger and lived with a spirit of generosity and acceptance that touched all who knew her.
Jeanette was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Anthony “Lag” Gagliano; her daughter, Patty; her parents, Frank and Rose DiChiara; and her brother, Joe DiChiara.
She is survived by her brother Frank “Buddy” (Rody) DiChiara; her children, Joey (Rosemary) Gagliano, Rosemary (Mike) Tippett, and Frank (Bonnie) Gagliano; her six grandchildren, Joseph (Yulia) Gagliano, Maria (Brad) Clay, Charlotte (Ryan) Young, Mary Grace Tippett, and Anna and Michael Gagliano; and three great-grandchildren - Giovanni Gagliano and Adaline and Eli Clay.
Jeanette’s life was a blessing to many, and her legacy of love, creativity, and kindness will continue through the generations she inspired.
A funeral Mass will be held at Prince of Peace Catholic Church on June 27th, 2025, with visitation from 10-11am and Mass starting at 11am. Interment will follow at Elmwood Cemetery. All are invited to a luncheon back at Prince of Peace. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Prince of Peace Catholic Church’s Minus One Group.
