Tomasko, Joe John, age 92 of Birmingham, AL, passed away Sunday, August 11, 2013. He was born in Portgage, PA on March 28, 1921. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Helen Kulbach Tomasko; his brothers: Mike, Steve, John, and Paul Tomasko. He is survived by many nieces and nephews. Joe was a veteran of WWII, enlisting after Pearl Harbor and serving for the duration. He trained in aerial photography and mapping. He served in several locations during the war including Thule, Greenland, and Central America. After the war. he came to Birmingham and worked at his trade, aerial surveying, for pioneer aviator, Glen Messer. In the mid 50's, he acquired the assets of Messer's company and formed Tomasko Aerial Surveys. He owned and operated this business until his retirement in 1994. Joe was a long time member of St. Pauls' Catholic Church and Quiet Birdmen. He was also active in several ballroom dancing clubs. His funeral service will be held at 11:00 at Ridout’s Elmwood Chapel with burial in Elmwood Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to the Southern Museum of Flight or a charity of your choice.
