After a valiant battle with Covid 19, John Pierce Abernathy, Jr. passed away on November 21, 2020. Born in Tuscaloosa on January 25, 1936 to John Pierce Abernathy, Sr. and Marie Wood Abernathy. He was preceded in death by his parents and his only sibling, Hugh Abernathy. Johnny graduated high school at Tuscaloosa High where he played trumpet. Enrolling at The University of Alabama he joined the Million Dollar Band where he played tuba. He was a veteran of the Alabama National Guard. After studying accounting at Alabama he became a Claims Manager at Liberty National in Birmingham. Perhaps his favorite job was at RWDSU downtown. After retiring, Johnny has spent the last two decades as a funeral director at Ridout’s Trussville Chapel. A member of Trussville United Methodist Church and the Pioneer Sunday School class. He was an avid Alabama fan, golfer, hunter, and fisherman. He also enjoyed road trips and cruises. Johnny leaves his wife, Margaret; his daughter, Susan (Tim); son, Kirk (Betsey) and four beloved grandchildren, Pierce and Peyton Garrison and Holland and Fox Abernathy. He loved his friends, co-workers, and his dogs. A private family graveside service will be held out of town. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later time.
