Johnny Winston Stevens, Jr., age 70, died on January 14, 2022. Born on February 24, 1951, in Pell City, Alabama, he is preceded in death by his parents JW Stevens and Pauline Norton Everette. He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Mary Viriciglio Stevens, his daughters Amanda Stevens Smith and Krista Stevens (Scott Inman), his sister Linda Sue Beane (Harold), and his granddaughter Isabelle Smith, his best little buddy. He also is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Johnny was a dedicated family man. He began life as a pesky little brother to Linda Sue, but after their father’s death, he took on the role of protector of his sister and mother. He brought this same devotion to his wife and children whom he loved fiercely. His granddaughter brought him profound joy, and the two became partners in crime, sneaking cookies and ice cream that they both knew they weren’t supposed to have.
Johnny always worked hard to provide for his family, spending over 35 years with Stockham / CRANE Valve. Despite working long hours, he always made sure he was there for his daughters’ dance recitals, piano recitals, and softball games (so many softball games). Johnny was quiet and reserved but had a biting wit that he loved to use to make people laugh. In his retirement he enjoyed checking the mail and spending some much deserved time with his wife. He was a lifelong fan of Alabama football, a master roach killer, a giver of excellent hugs, and was only ticklish on Wednesdays.
Though we know Johnny is wrapped in Jesus’ comforting embrace, our feelings of loss and sadness are deep. Johnny is loved immensely and missed tremendously.
A graveside service will be held on January 20, 2022, at Elmwood Cemetery. Masks are requested. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Johnny’s name to The Bell Center for Early Intervention Programs (https://thebellcenter.org/, 1700 29th Ct. South Birmingham, AL 35209 ).
