After a courageous battle against pneumonia, Margaret K. Abernathy passed away peacefully on May 7, 2024. Born in Hickory Valley, TN on May 21,1941 to Thomas Howard Kirk and Gladys Mestad Kirk. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John “Johnny” P. Abernathy, Jr., her parents and only sibling Everett “Sonny” Kirk. Margaret graduated high school from Aliceville High and went on to get her teaching degree from Livingston State College and later her master’s at UAB.
Margaret grew up in Panola, AL and spent every summer in Davidson, Saskatchewan where her dad trained hunting dogs and her mother ran the household entertaining clients and friends. Margaret had a strong family of friends in both Alabama and Canada.
She started her 40 plus year English teaching career at Fairfield High while later finishing her time at Erwin High where she touched thousands of students with most of those friendships lasting to this day.
Some of Margaret’s favorite times were spent at Cumberland Lake playing golf, dancing with her husband, and socializing with friends. After retiring, Margaret spent her years enjoying road trips, cruises, her grandkids, and dogs.
A member of Trussville Methodist Church and the Pioneer Sunday School class. Margaret leaves behind her daughter, Susan (Tim); son Kirk (Betsey) and four beloved grandchildren, Pierce and Peyton Garrison and Holland and Fox Abernathy.
Visitation will be at Ridout’s Trussville on May 10, 2024 from 5 to 7 pm with a small service and graveside at Panola United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Greater Birmingham Humane Society.
