Margene Shurett Thornton, most affectionately known by family and friends as “Nanny” went home peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior on January 30, 2023. She was 91 years old. Nanny had been surrounded by family and friends throughout the last week of her life. She was a constant blessing and prayer warrior to the very end of her life and exemplified the virtues of a Proverbs 31 woman.“Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.” Proverbs 31:28, 29
She was the wife of the late Harry “Pat” Preston Thornton. They shared 54 years of marriage together. She was born on August 26, 1931, in Bankhead, Alabama. Margene was the daughter of Ida and Fletcher Shurett.
She was an active member of Roebuck Park Baptist Church for over 50 years and then a member of Huffman Baptist Church for over 20 years. She was currently a member of Christ Church PCA. Nanny will be remembered for her strong faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, devoted love for her family, always doing for others, and her delicious cooking.
Margene was preceded in death by her husband, Harry “Pat” Preston Thornton; mother, Ida Terry Shurett; father, Robert Fletcher Shurett; sisters, Carlene Shurett Fleck and Elaine Shurett Farley.
Those left to cherish her memories are her sons, Larry (Pam) Thornton and Jeff (Paula) Thornton, and daughter, Nancy (Tim) Thornton Tuggle. Nanny was a devoted and loving grandmother to 8 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held Wednesday, February 1, 2023, at 3:00 pm at Christ Church PCA, 114 Watterson Parkway, Trussville, AL 35173 with James Dickson officiating. Friends may visit with the family at Christ Church PCA from 2:00 – 3:00 pm on Wednesday, February 1, 2023. Pallbearers are Bradley Thornton, Robert Thornton, John Thornton, Garrett Gowins, Taylor Summers, and Will Stevens.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Christ Church PCA Mission Fund.
