Mary Dyson Crawford (Mimi), a resident of Kirkwood by the River, departed this life on December 6, 2018, at the age of 88. Born in Birmingham April 8, 1930 to mother Dennis and father George E. Dyson, Jr., Mimi graduated Ramsay High School and married Edward Vaughan Crawford in 1948. A devoted wife and mother of eight children for 70 years, Mimi was a fabulous cook, accomplished water color artist, seamstress, medical secretary, mentor and "Fixer-in-Chief". Her passion was preparing healthy meals for family, friends and strangers for whom there was always room at the table. Through her meals, Mimi taught life’s lessons about doing the job right, even though several of her children occasionally required remedial training. A selfless woman of strong character, Mimi was the backbone of the family, having guided and nurtured those she loved so much through both good times and stormy weather. Mimi touched our hearts and taught us to work hard, love our families and serve others. In life, there can be no greater measure of success. Mimi will be deeply missed by all who were privileged to know her. Mimi was preceded in death by her husband Edward Vaughan Crawford, Sr. (2011), son Edward Vaughan Crawford, Jr. (1980), infant daughter Julia Eileen Crawford (1955) and brother Alfred Dyson. She is survived by children, John and Melanie Crawford, daughter Mary, Stephen and Nikki Crawford, Anthony and Savana Crawford, Helen and Reyn Norman, Evaughan Crawford and Loyce Stewart, her sister Betty and Jim Stanley of Boulder, Colorado and brother Eb and Joan Dyson of Birmingham; 21 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. The visitation will be held at Elmwood Chapel Funeral Home, Monday, December 10, 2018 from 1-2 p.m. followed by the graveside services at 2 p.m. The family would like to thank her doctors and staff at CVA, doctors and nurses at Grandview, Kindred Hospice, and especially everyone at Kirkwood by the River. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to United Ability, 100 Oslo Circle, Birmingham, AL 35211.
