Mary Jim Beaty Hancock, age 87, passed away Monday, November 2, 2015 after a sudden illness. She was preceded in death by her husband John Sherrill Hancock, her sister Francis Gordy and her brothers-in-law Ernest Gordy and Bill Bottomley. She is survived by her son Donald Wayne Hancock and daughter Jan Hancock; Sister Martha Cole Bottomley and several nieces and nephews. Mary Jim graduated from Ensley high school and was a secretary at U.S. Steel for several years. After her marriage to Sherrill and the birth of her children, she went back to school and received her teaching certificate. She taught at Leeds elementary, Vestavia Hills and Green Valley elementary. After years of teaching, she retired to Panama City Beach, Florida. Mary Jim loved her cat, sweets and old movies. She loved to laugh and most of all loved her children and sisters. She will be greatly missed by her loving family. Visitation will be on Thursday November 5, 2015 at 1:00 P.M. at Elmwood Chapel Funeral Home with graveside services following at 2:00 P.M. at Elmwood Cemetery.
