

On Wednesday, May 31, Michael Self, age 49, passed away in the presence of his family. Mike resided in Ft. Worth, TX, but his home was Birmingham, AL. On February 24, 1968, he was born to William David Self and Mary Elizabeth Self. In 1986, Mike graduated from Vestavia Hills High School and went on to attend the University of North Alabama on a football scholarship. He served as an Electronic Technician in the US Navy for five years. He was awarded the First Good Conduct Award, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Battle “E”, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Humanitarian Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal. Mike is survived by wife by his of 23 years, Ginger Sinyard Self, his sons Justin Burnett (19) and Brent Lee (15). He is also survived by his sister, Sundi Self King (Brian) of Birmingham, AL, brother William Brock Self of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, second mother, Jo Self and lifelong friend “brother” Chris Dickinson (Tionna) of Birmingham, AL, Grandmother Virginia Self, Aunt Lucy Withrow (Greg) of El Dorado, AR, and Richard Womack (Brenda) of Benton, AR. He was adored by his niece and nephews, Alex King, Gracie King, Connor Self, Brynna Sinyard Lee and Samuel Sinyard. One of Mike’s favorite pastimes was watching his sons play football. He was so proud of Justin and excited to watch him play at the Naval Academy. Mike knew Brent was going to have just as successful football future and had big dreams of where he would play after high school. His greatest love was his wife Ginger! He adored and cherished her and said many times she was the best half!! Mike truly loved the Arkansas Razorbacks and anything that included calling the Hogs! After his father’s passing, Mike became a core of strength for all of those around him. He was known for his love of family, concern for others and his zest for life. To know him was to love him. He will be deeply missed by all and his legacy lives on through many. He is predeceased by his parents, Mary Elizabeth Self (43) and William David Self (69), grandparents, Walter B Self, Doris Hanson, Lou Hanson. Services to be held Saturday, June 3 at Shades Crest Baptist Church in Hoover, AL. at 4 pm, with visitation for family one hour before the service, A memorial will be held for his Texas friends later in June. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The American Heart Association, The American Cancer Society and The American Diabetes Association.
