

Dr. Norma K. Mobley, 86, of Birmingham, AL died Dec. 27, 2014 with her family by her side. She was born to the late Norman and Mary King, August 29, 1928 in Star Junction PA. She moved to Birmingham with her family in her teen years. She went on to receive her RN from the Ida Moffitt School of Nursing and her B.A., M.A., and Ed.D from The University of Alabama. She married the love of her life, her husband John, in 1954 and they lived in Birmingham, AL most of their 61 years together. We celebrate the life of our loving wife and mother and thank her for giving us our lives, our values and most all her love.
Norma cherished the profession of nursing. She held a variety of positions at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing, including professor, chair of the Department of Maternal-Infant Nursing, and assistant dean of the baccalaureate program. She led curriculum innovations that solidified the school's national position among baccalaureate programs. She reached the pinnacle of her profession when she was appointed Dean of the Capstone College of Nursing at the University of Alabama where she significantly impacted health care policy, clinical practice and academia. Her initiatives for nursing education focused specifically on the expanding the capacity of nursing programs through faculty development, recruitment and retention, and the transformation of nursing curricula. Norma served as President of the Alabama State Nurses Association and was member of the legislative committee. She was a member of the board of directors for the Alabama League for Nursing and served on the Southeastern Regional Council on Nurse Midwifery. She was a charter member of Sigma Theta Tau, Nu Chapter. She retired from the University of Alabama in 1988.
Norma was preceded in death by her parents Norman and Mary King, her brothers, Jack King Sr., Brynley King Sr. and her son John M. Mobley III. She is survived by her husband John and 4 children: Ann M. Robertson (Mike), Jane E. Mobley (Ann Atkinson), of Birmingham, AL, Paul T. Mobley, Sr. (Ellen) of Pensacola, FL and Mary Beth Simonis (Alan) of Huntsville, AL. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild, all of whom she absolutely adored. Services will be held on December 30, 2014 at 2 PM at Elmwood Chapel. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to The Capstone College of Nursing.
